A Beginners’ Guide to Bird Watching
Posted on March 28, 2018 by

When trying to decide on fun activities to do while visiting fishing lodges and resorts, one thing you shouldn’t skip past is bird watching. Bird watching is a fun activity for the whole family to get involved in while visiting family lake resorts. Some may be intimidated by getting started, so this beginners guide can help you find a good starting place.

Birding Bible

One of the first things you’ll want to invest in for your new hobby of bird watching is a field guide. This guide will be the source you can use to identify the different birds that you’re spotting in the wild. There are a variety of guides to choose from with Sibley, National Geographic, Kaufman’s, Crossley’s, and Peterson’s being some of the most popular. There are also some great bird sites and apps you can use.

Equipment

You’ll also need some bird watching equipment. Binoculars are one of the most essential tools you’ll need for bird watching. You’ll want to invest in a nice pair of binoculars that’ll give you a good view of the birds you’re trying to find far away. You can get a nice pair for a few hundred dollars that’ll last for a long time. You may want to opt for a cheaper pair if younger children will be handling it unless you get a good warranty on them.

Another piece of equipment that can come in handy with bird watching is a bird feeder in your backyard. This feeder is a great way to attract an excellent variety of birds to your yard. This action makes it so you don’t have to travel to see new birds.

A final piece of equipment you may want to consider is a camera. A nice digital camera can help you to capture a visual memory of the fantastic bird you caught a glimpse of to show off to others. This picture can also be good to help you with identification later on.

Thinking of trying out your new skills at all-inclusive family resorts in Minnesota? Pelican Lake is an excellent choice. Contact us today to learn more about what we have on offer for bird watchers of any skill level. You’ll love the variety of birds you can see during your visit.
