The History of Orr, Minnesota
Located within the historical territories of the Ojibwe, the area around Orr remained largely unsettled until the arrival of the French fur traders known as voyageurs and their Ojibwe guides in the 1700s. In the late 1800s, the booming timber industry brought many lumberjacks and their families to the area.
Among them was William Orr, an entrepreneur and lumberman who built a hotel, general store, and other permanent structures that would later become the town bearing his name.
Founded in 1905, Orr became the center of activity and the source of many stories of wild adventure throughout the height of the lumbering industry.
Today, the timber industry remains an important aspect of the Orr experience, both in its current operations and rich history. In a modern, fast-paced world, the longing to return to places with serene natural beauty has led to tourism becoming a vital part of the economy.
The community of Orr, Minnesota, extends a hearty welcome to come and visit, take a picture with Billy the Bluegill, and enjoy the wonder. We’ll leave the northern lights on for you.
